SpaceX Bold Mission: A New Era for Human Space Travel

SpaceX has launched a mission to save two astronauts left on the International Space Station (ISS). This mission is going to bring back NASA astronaut Butch Wilmore and Indian-born cosmonaut Sunita Williams, who have been left in space since June owing to problems faced by them in the Boeing Starliner spacecraft.

SpaceX Launches Rescue Mission

On September 28, 2024, a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket launched from Cape Canaveral, Florida. The liftoff happened at 1:17 PM (1717 GMT) and was the first crewed mission to utilize a new launch pad. The rocket also carried NASA astronaut Nick Hague and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Gorbunov, leaving two seats empty for Wilmore and Williams.

Stranded Astronauts

Wilmore and Williams were originally scheduled to remain aboard the ISS for only eight days. But, as with the Starliner propulsion system, NASA had to revise its approach. Following successful tests of the systems on the Starliner, NASA resolved to bring the Starliner back to Earth without a crew, thus handing over responsibility for the rescue operation to SpaceX.

Unique Circumstances

Expectedly, there is some appreciation from NASA’s associate administrator Jim Free for this mission, as he opined that it is “a bit unique” because it shifted from a managed team of returning astronauts to just two. He also appreciated the help of and the time taken by, SpaceX.

Future Plans

The Dragon capsule will arrive at the ISS on 29th September 2024. After a handover period, in February 2025, Wilmore and Williams will be taken back to Earth by Hague and Gorbunov before Wilmore and Williams re-embark into space. By then, Wilmore and Williams would have been in orbit for around eight months.

Conclusion

The mission also underlines the importance of SpaceX in NASA’s commercial crew program. Even as they come up with new ways to travel to space, SpaceX’s focus remains the safety of the astronauts returning from their missions and the issues facing human spaceflight.
