Well-known Palestinian politician Ismail Haniyeh was an important Hamas leader who played a crucial role in the party’s administration and foreign relations. He was born in a Gaza refugee camp called Shati in 1962, fleeing Ashkelon with his family during the 1948 Arab-Israeli War. In 1987, he graduated from the Islamic University of Gaza with a major in Arabic literature and, during this time, became a member of the Hamas, participating in demonstrations against Israeli occupation that took place at the beginning of the First Intifada.
Political Career
The late 1980s marked the beginning of Haniyeh’s flourishing political career. For his activism, he was imprisoned several times by Israeli authorities, leading to his exile in Lebanon in 1992. He later returned to Gaza, where he took up the position of architectural dean at the Islamic University and later became an important figure in Hamas. In 2006, Haniyeh led the Hamas to victory in Palestinian legislative elections and was subsequently appointed Prime Minister of the Palestinian Authority. Nevertheless, he lost this control after international sanctions were imposed and conflicts with Fatah erupted, which led to Hamas taking over control over Gaza (2007). In 2017, Haniyeh was elected head of Hamas’ political bureau until he was assassinated in 2024. His leadership was characterized by his involvement in negotiations and mediation for ceasefires during conflicts between Israel and the Palestinians.

Assassination
Haniyeh was assassinated on July 31, 2024, during a visit to Tehran, Iran, when he went to attend President Masoud Pezeshkian’s inauguration. He was killed in a pre-dawn aerial strike attributed largely to Israel. This attack occurred just after a meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, indicating his importance within the Iranian-led Axis of Resistance against Israel. The assassination is considered a serious escalation in the ongoing conflict, in which Iran promised to retaliate against Israel over Haniyeh’s death, describing it as an act of terrorism. Haniyeh’s assassination came at a time when there were heightened tensions resulting from the attacks carried out by Hamas on Israel on October 7, 2023, leading to significant casualties and further escalating Israel-Hamas disputes. His death not only marked a major loss for Hamas but also made ongoing negotiations for peace difficult since he was seen as an important mediator in peace talks through ceasefires and negotiation discussions.
Gaza and Rafah: The Struggle Against Oppression
Personal Life
Haniyeh had been hitched and had thirteen kids. Tragically, three of his sons perished in an Israeli bombing in April 2024, which was a personal tragedy that took him on the wrong path. He was a leader of political success and heartbreaking mishaps, just as it’s complicated to understand Palestinian politics. To sum up, Ismail Haniyeh was a central figure in Palestinian politics and the Hamas Movement, whose life was defined by the struggle against critical loss, service, and other types of betrayal. His death will have a great impact on Hamas’s future and the larger politics in the Middle East.
